What Has Changed?
Sri Lankan law mandates that all foreign nationals who wish to drive in Sri Lanka must have their International Driving Permit (IDP) or home country driving licence verified and endorsed locally. This verification process is commonly referred to as obtaining a Sri Lankan Recognition Permit or a Temporary Driving Licence.
Although there were previously plans for the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) to offer this service at the Bandaranaike International Airport, those plans are no longer in effect. As of now, there are only two official options available for foreign drivers in Sri Lanka.
Your Two Options for Driving in Sri Lanka as a Foreigner
Option 1: Endorsement of Your IDP by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AA Ceylon)
If you already have a valid International Driving Permit (IDP), you can get it endorsed locally by AA Ceylon in Colombo. This endorsement legally allows you to drive in Sri Lanka.

- Fast and convenient – over-the-counter service takes as little as 30 minutes.
- No need to be present – a representative or rental car company can handle the process for you.

- Central location – the AA Ceylon office is in the heart of Colombo.

- Slightly higher cost than a temporary DMT permit.
- IDP required – you must already possess a valid International Driving Permit from your home country.

Option 2: Temporary Sri Lankan Driving Permit from the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT)
If you do not hold an International Driving Permit (IDP), you must obtain a Temporary Sri Lankan Driving Licence issued by the DMT, located in Werahera, about 30–45 minutes from central Colombo.

- No IDP required – you can apply using your home country licence.
- May be cost-effective compared to the AA endorsement route.
❌ Cons
- In-person visit required – you must be physically present.
- Longer processing time – expect 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the crowd.
- Less convenient location – DMT Werahera is outside central Colombo.
- Multiple steps – the process may require visiting several counters within the office.
